Nordic nRF52820 SoC adds full-speed USB 2.0 and Bluetooth 5.2, Bluetooth low energy, Bluetooth Mesh, Thread and Zigbee support to the nRF52 series of low-end devices

Oslo, Norway – March 19, 2020 – Nordic semiconductor announced the launch of the nRF52820 Bluetooth 5.2 system-on-chip (SoC), the sixth product in its popular and market-proven nRF52 series. This device is a proprietary low-end wireless connection solution with ultra-low power consumption Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth Low Energy /Bluetooth LE), Bluetooth mesh, Thread, Zigbee and 2.4 GHz. nRF52820 has all the functions of Bluetooth 5, 5.1 and 5.2, including long-distance transmission and 2 Mbps high throughput, direction finding, low-power power control and low-power synchronization channels. The device also includes a full-speed (12 Mbps) USB 2.0 interface.

nRF52820 has a powerful 64MHz 32-bit ArmCortex-M4 processor with 256KB flash memory and 32KB RAM, which makes it an ideal single-chip device choice for a wide range of commercial and industrial wireless applications, including professional lighting, asset tracking, HID And game products. In addition, nRF52820 has a full-featured multi-protocol radio and +8 dBm output power. When used in conjunction with an application MCU, it becomes an ideal network processor for gateways and other smart home applications that require advanced wireless connections. nRF52820 meets operating requirements in the extended industrial temperature range of -40 to 105°C, and is suitable for commercial and industrial applications including professional lighting.

A key function of nRF52820 is full-speed (12 Mbps) USB operation. USB is a popular connection interface for low-latency and high-bandwidth communication with many host devices (such as PCs, smart phones, and gateways). This connectivity also makes device firmware updates (DFU) via USB feasible. In addition to the main power regulator, the USB of the nRF52820 also includes a dedicated regulator for converting the 5 V VBUS signal into the 3.3 V signal required by the USB signaling interface, thus eliminating the need for an external regulator The cost and space required.

nRF52820 includes up to 18 GPIOs and a series of analog and digital interfaces, such as analog comparators, SPI, UART, TWI and QDEC. The power supply voltage covers an input voltage range of 1.7 to 5.5V, so that nRF52820 can be powered by button batteries and rechargeable batteries. When connecting with a USB host, nRF52820 can use the always existing 5 V VBUS signal to directly supply power. Nordic provides a reference wiring design for this configuration.

nRF52820 supports S112 and S140 (in line with Bluetooth 5.1 protocol stack requirements) SoftDevice and S122 (internal beta) SoftDevice. S112 and S122 are the peripheral protocol stack and central protocol stack optimized for memory, respectively, while S140 is the Bluetooth 5 protocol stack with complete functions for central control and peripheral devices, including long-distance transmission and 2 Mbps high throughput capability. Nordic’s nRF5 SDK (software development kit) v16.0.0 supports the use of nRF52820 for product development, and Nordic will provide comprehensive nRF5 SDK support in the second quarter of 2020. Customers can use the nRF52833 Development Kit (DK) for nRF52820 simulation, which is a good foundation for starting a design based on nRF52820. This kit is a general-purpose single-board development kit, suitable for low energy Bluetooth, Bluetooth Mesh, 802.15.4, Thread, Zigbee and 2.4GHz proprietary applications. The kit is compatible with the Arduino Uno Rev3 standard, and customers can use the compatible Nordic Power Profiler kit and a variety of third-party Arduino interface expansion boards during development.

Kjetil Holstad, Director of Product Management at Nordic Semiconductor, said: “As a Bluetooth 5.2 multi-protocol SoC suitable for budget-constrained applications, nRF52820 extends the mature and market-proven nRF52 series hardware and software platform. The nRF52 series is now built by ODM and OEM manufacturers. The ideal platform for all short-range wireless products. The universal hardware and software architecture in this series brings excellent software portability, improves software reusability, and reduces product time-to-market and development costs.”

Nordic now provides nRF52820 engineering samples, which are packaged in 5×5 mm QFN40, with 18 GPIOs, and can reuse PCBA with Nordic’s nRF52833 SoC.
